Alex Gordon

MLB: Kansas City 7, Baltimore 5

Kansas City, Mo. -- Alex Gordon hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth inning Friday, rallying the Kansas City Royals to a 7-5 victory over Baltimore.

The Royals were on the verge of losing their sixth straight game before putting together an unlikely two-out rally against Alfredo Simon (2-2).

After the first two batters of the inning grounded out, Rick Ankiel drew a walk off Simon and moved to third on a single by Wilson Betemit. That brought up Gordon, who took the first pitch for a ball and hit the second one over the wall in right to win it.

It was only the second home run of the season for Gordon, who likely became Kansas City's regular left fielder when the Royals traded Scott Podsednik to the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday.

MLB: Kansas City 12, Boston 9

Kansas City, Mo., Sept. 22: Yuniesky Betancourt stroked a two-run single to ignite a six-run sixth inning Monday and the Kansas City Royals beat Boston 12-9.

Mike Jacobs had a three-run home run and Billy Butler, Alberto Callaspo and Alex Gordon drove in two runs apiece for the Royals, who erased an 8-2 deficit and earned their 11th win in 14 games.

Jason Bay had a three-run home run for the Red Sox, who lead Texas by 7 1/2 games in the AL wild-card chase, pending the outcome of the Rangers' game in Oakland Monday.

Victor Martinez had two RBI and ran his hitting streak to a career-best 20 games. Jacoby Ellsbury knocked in two runs for Boston.

MLB: Kansas City 14, Minnesota 6

Minneapolis, Aug. 12: Miguel Olivo had three hits, including a home run, drove in three runs and scored three Tuesday in the Kansas City Royals' 14-6 pounding of Minnesota.

Alex Gordon, Yuniesky Betancourt and Mitch Maier had two hits and two RBI apiece for the Royals, who won for the third time in their last five games.

Kansas City starter Kyle Davies (4-8) went five innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts to get the win.

Denard Span drove in two runs and Delmon Young and Brendan Harris homered for the Twins.

Minnesota starter Nick Blackburn (8-7) lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits in the Twins' eighth loss in their last 10 games.

Hip surgery for KC third baseman

Kansas City, Mo. -- Kansas City Royals third baseman Alex Gordon will miss 10-12 weeks after undergoing successful right hip surgery on Friday, the team said.

Gordon was injured last Saturday in a game against the New York Yankees. He was placed on Kansas City's 15-day disabled list Thursday with what doctors called a right hip labral cartilage tear.

The procedure was performed Friday morning by Dr. Marc Philippon, a specialist sometimes called the "hip doctor to the stars," in Vail, Colo.
Philippon performed the same surgery March 9 on New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez.

Gordon was struggling this season, with just two hits in 21 at-bats, an .095 batting average.
