Szavay among Portugal upset victims

Estoril, Portugal -- Top-seeded Agnes Szavay was ousted in a tight three-set, first-round loss Monday at the $220,000 Estoril Open tennis tournament in Portugal.

Szavay was one of three upset victims during Monday's play at the clay-court tournament. She was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 by Anastasija Sevastova.

Sevastova won seven more points (92-85) in the match but was able to pile up seven service breaks, including three in the final set.

Also losing Monday were No. 3-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak, who was pasted 6-1, 6-1 in 48 minutes by Julia Goerges, and eighth-seeded Sybille Bammer, who fared barely better in a 6-1, 6-3 rout by Kirsten Flipkens.

No. 7-seeded Shuai Peng, who topped Julie Coin 6-2, 6-2, was the only seeded winner Monday.

Bondarenko, Wozniak post Charleston wins

Charleston, S.C. -- Alona Bondarenko and Aleksandra Wozniak were first-round winners Monday at the Family Circle Cup tennis event in Charleston, S.C.

Bondarenko of Ukraine, the No. 9 seed, dispatched American Julie Ditty 6-4, 6-2, while 12th-seeded Wozniak of Canada held on to down American Lilia Osterloh 6-3, 7-6 (11-9).

American qualifier Christina McHale rallied to overcome Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3; Rossana del los Rios of Paraguay defeated American wild card Mallory Cecil 6-0, 6-4; and German Angelique Kerber put away American wild card Alison Riske 6-2, 6-4.

Romanian Edina Gallovits dropped American Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-3 and drew second-seeded Serbian star Jelena Jankovic as her second-round opponent.

Wozniacki very sharp in second-round win

Osaka, Japan, Oct. 15: Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki needed just 13 games Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the $220,000 HP Japan Women's Open tennis tournament.

Wozniacki ran past Katie O'Brien 6-0, 6-1 in a 44-minute match in which Wozniacki dropped just nine points over six service games. Wozniacki, the defending champion of the tournament, won 71 percent of the points in the match, including 69 percent when O'Brien served.

She draws No. 6-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak in Friday's quarterfinals. Wozniak claimed a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) win over Kai-Chen Chang in her second-round match.

Wozniak reaches Bell Challenge quarters

Quebec City, Sept. 18: Aleksandra Wozniak, seeking the first tournament triumph in her six-year career, reached the quarterfinals Thursday at the Bell Challenge.

Wozniak, seeded third, defeated Regina Kulikova 6-2, 7-5 to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Alla Kudryavtseva.

The only other seeded player in action Thursday was No. 4 Lucie Safarova, who was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Valerie Tetreault.

Qualifier Lilia Osterlog advanced with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 decision over Amra Sadikovic and
Bethanie Mattek-Sands defeated Vania King 6-3, 6-3.

Williams sisters advance at Bank of West

Stanford, Calif. July 29: Venus and Serena Williams advanced to the second round of the Bank of the West Classic in California Tuesday.

Daniela Hantuchova ousted defending champ Aleksandra Wozniak 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a battle lasting 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Serena Williams, the top seed in the tourney, beat Li Na in the opening set 6-3, but ran into stubborn resistance from Li, who saved four match points in the second set and went to a tie-breaker before finally succumbing 7-6.

"I was playing a tough player who never gave up," said Williams, who admitted she had been overly eager to put the match away. "She's always playing so well and it's important not to get anxious."

Kuznetsova, Jankovic lose at Eastbourne

Eastbourne, England -- French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and U.S. Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic were first-round losers Tuesday at the Aegon International.

The second-seeded Kuznetsova, who won the women's French Open two weeks ago, lost to Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-0, 6-3. Third-seeded former world No. 1 Jankovic lost to Russian Anna Chakvetadze 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-2.

In another upset, former top-ranked star and former Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo defeated fourth-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Wozniak moves to Aegon third round

Birmingham, England. -- No. 3-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak was a straight-set winner Wednesday in the second round of the rain-plagued $220,000 Aegon Classic in England.

Four matches were suspended Tuesday because of rain and 12 more were either suspended or postponed Wednesday.

Wozniak got her match in in an efficient 77 minutes, stopping Olga Govortsova 6-4, 6-4. The difference in the tight match was Wozniak's success on Govortsova's second serve.

There were a pair of upsets Wednesday as sixth-seeded Ekaterina Makarova was toppled 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 by Stefanie Voegele and 12th-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn fell 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4 to Naomi Cavaday.
