Miyazato back at women's golf No. 1

Daytona Beach, Fla. -- Ai Miyazato's victory at the LPGA's Safeway Classic in Oregon returned her to No. 1 in the world women's golf rankings.

Miyazato won the tournament -- her fifth LPGA title of the year -- by two strokes over Choi No-yeon and Cristie Kerr with Kim Song-hee and Suzann Pettersen tied for fourth another stroke back. Miyazato turned in an even-par 72 Sunday and finished the 54-hole tournament at 11-under 205.

Her move to the top of the rankings marks the third time Miyazato, who leads the LPGA money list and the standings for 2010 Player of the Year, has taken over the No. 1 ranking. Her two previous visits each lasted just one week, however.

Miyazato logs wire-to-wire Safeway win

North Plains, Ore. -- Ai Miyazato fired an even-par 72 Sunday to complete a wire-to-wire victory at the Safeway Classic, ending one stroke ahead of Cristie Kerr.

Miyazato notched her fifth win of 2010, ending at 11-under-par 205, one ahead of Kerr's 10-under 204.

Kerr, ranked No. 1 in the world coming into the tourney, shot a 2-under 70 after hitting one in the water on the 18th and closing with a bogey.

She ended up sharing second place with Na Yeon Choi (71) at minus-nine.

Suzann Pettersen shot a 69 to end one stroke further back at minus-8, tied with Song-Hee Kim (72) for fourth place.

The victory will likely move Miyazato back into the No. 1 spot and also put her atop the LPGA Tour money list.

Miyazato keeps grip on Safeway Classic

North Plains, Ore. -- Ai Miyazato lengthened her lead in the Safeway Classic after two rounds Saturday, carding a 5-under-par 67 at at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.

Miyazato, who led by a single shot after, ended the day at 11-under 133, three strokes ahead of Song-Hee Kim (64) and Na Yeon Choi (67), who are knotted at 8-under 136.

Miyazato is seeking her fifth tourney win of the season. A win would move her back into the world No. 1 ranking.

It was a rough day for Juli Inkster, who despite shooting a 5-under 67 was disqualified for using a weighted device on her club when she was taking practice swings on the 10th tee.

Jiyai Shin (68) and Cristie Kerr (67) were tied one stroke further back at minus-7.

Miyazato leads Safeway Classic

North Plains, Ore. -- Ai Miyazato, seeking to regain the No. 1 ranking in women's golf, shot a 6-under 66 Friday to take the lead at the Safeway Classic in Oregon.

Miyazato has won four times this season and has alternately held the top spot in the world rankings with Jiyai Shin and Cristie Kerr.

Even though no tournament was played on the LPGA Tour last week, Kerr moved past Shin into the No. 1 spot this week and Miyazato advanced to No. 2.

Teresa Lu and Jee Young Lee shared second place at 67 while those tied for third at 68 included Chella Choi, Brittany Lincicome, Momoko Ueda and Amy Hung.

Shin opened the tournament with a 3-under 69 and Kerr shot a 70. Michelle Wie settled for an even-par 72.

Miyazato again women's golf No. 1

Daytona Beach -- Ai Miyazato has retaken the world No. 1 ranking in women's golf, switching places with Cristie Kerr.

Miyazato and Kerr are tied in average ranking points at 10.27 but Miyazato has played in more tournaments. That allowed her to return to the top spot she held for one week a month ago.

It is the fifth change at the No. 1 spot in the history of the women's golf rankings but fourth since Lorena Ochoa announced her retirement in May.

Prior to that, the women's No. 1 spot was one of the most unchanging in sports.

Annika Sorenstam was at the top for the first 60 weeks of the rankings before Ochoa took over and reigned for 158 weeks.

Miyazato claims LPGA Classic, top ranking

GAlloway, N.J. -- Ai Miyazato became the world's top-ranked female golfer Sunday after posting her fourth win of the year, a two-shot victory at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

Miyazato charged from behind to win the event, carding a 7-under-par 64 to finish at 16-under 197, two clear of second-round leader M.J. Hur (68) at the Dolce Seaview Resort in Galloway, N.J.

Miyazato claimed the lead with a tap-in birdie on the ninth hole and was never headed, draining a 25-footer for birdie at the 10th and a 15-foot birdie putt on the 14th.

Hur challenged with birdies 16 and 17 to get within two, but Miyazato poured in a 6-footer for birdie on the final hole to gain the winner's circle.

Miyazato wins Tres Marias by one stroke

Morelia -- Ai Miyazato shot a 6-under 67 Sunday, beating Stacy Lewis by a single stroke to claim the Tres Marias Championship in Mexico.

The Japanese star notched her third 2010 championship, finishing at 19-under-par 273, one better than Lewis, who carded a 66 to end at minus-18.

Michelle Wie fired a 5-under 68 to take third at 17-under 275, while In Kyung Kim ended alone in fourth thanks to her final round of 64, the lowest score of the day.

Fifth place went to Na Yeon Choi, who closed at minus-13 with a round of 71.

Mexican favorite Lorena Ochoa finished sixth in her final tournament before retiring. She shot a 71 in the final round to finish at 12-under-par 280.

Miyazata forges into Tres Marias lead

Moreloa, Mexico -- Ai Miyazato of Japan carded a 2-under 71 Saturday to forge a one-shot lead after three rounds of the Tres Marias Championship in Mexico.

Miyazato pushed past Michelle Wie and Brittany Lincicome to grab the lead, finishing 54 holes with a 13-under 206. The Japanese star took her first LPGA victory last year at the Evian Masters and is ranked No. 5 in the world.

Wie (73) and Lincicome (72) faltered down the stretch. Both notched a pair of bogeys during their last four holes in giving up the lead.

The pair were one shot back at 12-under 207, while Stacy Lewis (69) and Na Yeon Choi (71) were knotted for fourth at 11-under 208.

Miyazato new No. 3 in women's golf ranking

Daytona Beach -- Ai Miyazato's second LPGA win in as many weeks moved her to No. 3 in the world women's golf rankings released Monday.

Miyazato, from Japan, won the HSBC Women's Champions tournament in Singapore, using a final-round 3-under-par 69 Sunday to hold off a charge from American Cristie Kerr. She won the LPGA season-opening Honda PTT in Thailand the previous week.

She had one LPGA regular-tour title before this season opened but won 15 times on the LPGA of Japan Tour and opened 2010 ranked No. 8 in the world. The early-season success moved her to a No. 3 ranking.

Miyazato claims second LPGA title of 2010

Singapore -- Ai Miyazato collected her second LPGA title in as many weeks Sunday in winning the HSBC Women's Champions tournament in Singapore.

Miyazato opened the 2010 LPGA season with a win last week in Thailand. She shot 3-under-par 69 Sunday and finished at 10-under 278 for the tournament and ended two strokes ahead of runner-up Cristie Kerr.

Four golfers, including last week's second-place finisher Suzann Pettersen, tied for third at 7-under 281. Third-round co-leader Juli Inkster, who was bidding to become the oldest LPGA tournament winner, shot 2-over 74 Sunday and tied for ninth.
