Radwanska up to No. 9 in tennis rankings

Daytona Beach-- Agnieszka Radwanska lost a tough three-set match in a WTA tournament final Sunday bit still moved up in the women's world rankings.

Radwanska fell to Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 at the WTA stop in San Diego. She is 10-3 in her last three tournaments and slipped past Vera Zvonareva and into ninth in rankings, which were updated Monday.

Zvonareva, who was a second-round loser in San Diego, is 10th but fewer than 100 rankings points ahead of Li Na, who was a semifinalist last week's Danish Open.

Kuznetsova's tournament win moved her from 21st to 14th in the rankings.

Kuznetsova, Radwanska in Mercury final

Carlsbad, Calif. -- Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia and Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland will square off Sunday for the Mercury Insurance Open championship.

The winner will earn $107,000.

Kuznetsova gained the final with a 6-4, 6-0 semifinal victory Saturday over fifth-seeded Flavia Pennetta, who was making a bid to join Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova as the only players to reach four finals this season.

Radwanska, seeded fourth, defeated Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Kuznetsova and Radwanska also met in the 2009 China Open final, with Kuznetsova winning her 12th career title in straight sets.

Radwanska has four career victories.

Radwanska rolls past Peer at La Costa

Carlsbad, Calif. -- Agnieszka Radwanska earned her second trip to the semifinals in as many weeks Friday with a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of Sasha Peer at the Mercury Insurance Open.

Radwanska reached the semifinals last week at the Bank of the West Classic before losing to Maria Sharapova.

This time she will meet Daniela Hantuchova, who was a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner over Alisa Kleybanova.

Kleybanova had ousted top-seeded Jelena Jankovic in the second round. Radwanska will be trying for her first appearance in a championship match this year.

Wozniacki, Radwanska move up in rankings

Daytona Beach, Fla. -- Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska each inched up one spot in world women's tennis rankings released Monday.

Radwanska moved from 11th to 10th after reaching the semifinals of the WTA event at Palo Alto, Calif., switching places in the rankings with Li Na.

Wozniacki benefited from Venus Williams, who has been on tour promoting her book "Come to Win," skipping the California tournament. Williams was the runner-up at Palo Also last year so lost 320 rankings points.

As a result, Williams dropped to fourth and Wozniacki moved back to third in the rankings.

Radwanska advances at Palo Alto

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland defeated South African Chanelle Scheepers 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 Monday at the Bank of the West Classic in Palo Alto, Calif.

In other first-round action, Olga Govortsova of Belarus defeated Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-1, 6-1; Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia dropped American Hilary Barte 6-2, 6-2; and Ana Ivanovic of Serbia eliminated Alisa Kleybanova of Russia 6-3, 6-2.

Second-round upsets mark German tournament

Stuttgart, Germany -- Seeded players Svetlana Kuznetsova and Agnieszka Radwanska both lost second-round matches Tuesday at the $700,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany.

Kuznetsova, the tournament's No. 3 seed, was beaten 6-3, 7-5 by Na Li. Na was good on 83 percent of her first serves and cashed in 70 percent of the points when she got the first serve in.

The fifth-seeded Radwanska was ousted by Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, losing her service games seven times in 14 chances.

The rest of the schedule Wednesday included the completion of the first round with No. 4-seeded Jelena Jankovic's 6-2, 6-2 win over Gisela Dulko in one of the most solid performances of the day.

Wozniacki reaches Indian Wells semis

Indian Wells, Calif. -- Agnieszka Radwanska and Caroline Wozniacki earned berths in the semifinals Wednesday at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

Radwanska, seeded fifth in the 96-player field, defeated No. 4 Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-3. The second-seeded Wozniacki eliminated Zheng Jie 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

The survivors of Wednesday's quarterfinal matches are the highest seeded players left in the tournament. No. 1 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was knocked out in the second round last week.

The other two quarterfinals will be played Thursday. Alisa Kleybanova will meet Jelena Jankovic and Vera Zvonareva will play Maria Martinez Sanchez.

Martinez Sanchez upset third-seeded Victoria Azarenka in the third round.

Four seeds fall at women's Kremlin Open

Moscow -- Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, No. 5 Nadia Petrova of Russia and two other seeded players were upset Wednesday at the Kremlin Cup.

Russian Maria Kirilenko dropped Radwanska 6-3, 6-3 in a first-round meeting and Petrova fell to Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in a second-round contest.

The loss eliminated Radwanska from contention for the WTA Tour season-ending event in Doha.

Fourth-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy retired due to a left-knee injury during the second set in her match against Hungarian Agnes Szavay, with the score 4-6, 3-0. Sixth-seeded Elena Vesnina of Russia was upset by fellow countrywoman Evgeniya Rodina 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

Radwanska advances at Linz tennis event

Linz Oct. 14 -- Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland led Wednesday's winners at the Generali Ladies Linz tennis tournament at Linz, Austria.

Radwanska, last week's runner-up to Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova at the China Open in Beijing, beat Romania's Monica Niculescu 6-4, 6-2 in her opening match at the Intersport Arena in Linz.

Her second-round opponent will be unseeded Alize Cornet of France, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 winner over Germany's Kristina Barrois.

Kuznetsova survives third-set tiebreaker

New Haven, Conn. Aug. 27: Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova survived a third-set tiebreaker Wednesday to capture a berth in the quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen in New Haven, Conn.

Kuznetsova, ranked sixth in the world, defeated Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) and will meet Amelie Mauresmo in the quarterfinals Thursday. Kuznetsova won this tournament two years ago and Mauresmo was a finalist in 2005.

No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki moved into the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Virginia Razzano will be Wozniacki's opponent in the quarterfinals.

Third-seeded Flavia Pennetta advanced when Agnieszka Radwanska retired in the third set with a hand injury. Elena Vesnina eliminated Samantha Stosur 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Sharapova to play in Los Angeles semis

Los Angeles, Aug. 8: Maria Sharapova fought off Urszula Radwanska Friday to reach the semifinals of the Los Angeles Women's Open.

Sharapova will try to earn her first trip to a tournament final when she meets either Flavia Pennetta or Vera Zvonareva in Saturday's semifinal.

Samantha Stosur continued her recent outstanding play by getting past Jie Zheng 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Stosur defeated Serena Williams last week at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford.

Stosur's semifinal opponent will be Sorana Cirstea, who defeated Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 7-5.
