Recommendations costing women jobs

Houston -- Qualities used in letters of recommendation for women differ sharply than those for men, making them a chute in a woman's career ladder, U.S. researchers say.

Rice University professors Michelle Hebl and Randi Martin and graduate student Juan Madera, now an assistant professor at the University of Houston, reviewed 624 letters of recommendation for 194 applicants for eight university faculty jobs.

Female candidates were described in more communal -- social or emotive -- terms, such as: affectionate, helpful, kind, sympathetic, nurturing, tactful and agreeable, with behaviors such as helping others, taking direction well and maintaining relationships.

Gun teacher inspired by pushy Christians

Centerfield, Ky. -- A 70-year-old Kentucky woman who works as a gun-safety instructor said she was inspired by an encounter with a group of aggressive evangelicals.

Sylvia Hall of Centerfield said she was inspired to obtain her National Rifle Association certification, which required 45 hours of training, and teach gun-safety classes after she used her Smith & Wesson to get scare off four men who showed up on her doorstep and wanted to read to her from the Bible, The Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Wednesday.

Hall said the men refused to take no for an answer and attempted to push their way into her home.

"Women shouldn't be afraid in their own homes," Hall said. "They ought to be able to protect themselves."

Giant beehive delays house project

Lake Worth, Fla. -- A Florida bee trapper said a home improvement project was impeded by the discovery of a large hive housing thousands of bees.

Brian Moore said he was called to the Lake Worth house to remove the hive after workers discovered it inside a wall during a construction project, WPBF-TV, West Palm Beach, Fla., reported Tuesday.

"They weren't extremely aggressive, but they were fairly aggressive," Moore said.
"They've got to defend their hive. They give off a pheromone and it tells the other bees to attack."

He said the hive measured 6 feet long and 4 feet wide.
