Dallas -- Forward Jere Lehtinen said Wednesday he's retiring after 14 years in the NHL, all of them with the Dallas Stars.
Lehtinen, who became a free agent after last season, hadn't caught on with a squad this year. The 37-year-old Finn released his retirement announcement through the Stars, who drafted him in 1992 when the team was still in Minnesota.
"It's a tough decision due to the fact that you play hockey your entire life and then must decide to stop playing," he said. "The memories I have playing in Dallas will never be forgotten and I will always be proud of the fact that I finished my career where it started."

Cleveland -- The Cleveland Cavaliers suspect the Miami Heat broke NBA anti-tampering rules while wooing free agent forward LeBron James, Yahoo! Sports reported Wednesday.

The Heat signed James and former Toronto forward Chris Bosh prior to the start of the 2010-11 season in an unprecedented assembling of NBA free agent star power.

Miami -- Teenage Cuban baseball star Yasiel Balaguer has defected to Nicaragua with an eye to making it to the U.S. major leagues, his agent said.

The 17-year-old Balaguer, a center fielder, has played on Cuban teams in international tournaments. He was a starter for the Cuban club in the World Junior Baseball Championship in Ontario this past summer, El Nuevo Herald reported.
Balaguer is represented by Carlos Perez, president of Miami Sports, an agency that manages the careers of a number of other players from Cuba, the newspaper said.

Columbus, Ohio -- A California woman who flew into an Ohio airport in a chartered jet with 13 suitcases had more than 500 pounds of marijuana in her luggage, investigators say.
Lisette Lee, 28, of Beverly Hills appeared in federal court Tuesday wearing a prison jumpsuit, handcuffs and leg chains, The Columbus Dispatch reported. A bail hearing was postponed until Friday to give her family time to travel from California.
A complaint filed by the Drug Enforcement Administration said agents in Los Angeles passed on a tip to their colleagues in Columbus. They said Lee was making frequent flights to Columbus with an unusual amount of luggage.
Her luggage was searched Monday evening when she arrived at Port Columbus and she was arrested.
