MLB: Chicago Cubs 3, San Francisco 2

San Francisco, Sept. 25: Jeff Baker hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning Thursday to give the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory over San Francisco.

The Chicago win forced the St. Louis Cardinals to wait at least one more day before clinching the National League Central title. The Cardinals had an off day in Denver awaiting the start of a series against the Rockies Friday -- and might have celebrated a sixth division crown in 10 years but for the Cubs' late comeback.

MLB: St. Louis 3, Chi. Cubs 2

St. Louis, Sept. 19: Matt Holliday opened the ninth inning with a home run off Aaron Heilman Friday, giving St. Louis a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

St. Louis increased its lead over Chicago to 10 games in the National League Central. Any combination of six St. Louis wins or Chicago losses during the final two weeks of the season will make the Cardinals division champion.

The Cardinals have a 34-16 record since July 24, when they obtained Holliday in a trade with Oakland.

The Cardinals defeated the Cubs for the eighth time in 11 games.

St. Louis starter John Smoltz allowed six hits and two runs over six innings. The win went to Ryan Franklin (3-3), who worked the top of the ninth.

MLB: Chicago Cubs 13, Milwaukee 7

Chicago, Sept. 16: Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto had three RBI apiece Tuesday to lead the surging Chicago Cubs to a 13-7 win over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.

The Cubs racked up five runs in the sixth inning to take control en route to their seventh win in eight games.

With the score tied 5-5, Milwaukee's bullpen fell apart with two hit batters and a two-run single by Soto.

Soto led off the fifth inning with his 11th home run of the season. Lee stroked a two-run double in the fourth.

Chicago added two more runs in the second, one of which strolled home from third when Chris Smith plunked Milton Bradley with the bases loaded.

MLB: Chicago Cubs 5, Houston 1

Chicago, July 28: Alfonso Soriano hit a grand slam with none out in the bottom of the 13th Monday to give the Chicago Cubs a 5-1 win over Houston.

Derrek Lee led off the inning with a walk and went to third on a single by Aramis Ramirez. The Astros intentionally walked Milton Bradley to load the bases for Soriano, who deposited his 18th homer of the season over the center field fence.

Carlos Lee had given Houston a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo home. Derek Lee led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to make it 1-1.

Derek Lee had two hits and scored twice, while Ramirez had three hits and scored once for the Cubs, who have won five straight games and nine out of 11.
