The battle to be the "numero uno" in the POV camera market is heating up every day and this new product from V.I.O is surely one of the frontrunner in the race.
Thanks to its crystal clear 1080p HD video recording capability and impressive battery back up, it can be the ideal tour partner for the mountain trekking enthusiasts and adventure lovers.
Remember one thing, every great gadget comes with a price and the V.I.O POV.HD comes with a really costly tag of $600. If you can afford that much then this is the HD camera for you.
Hardware
The POV HD sports a rather different style in this department. It has a rather small lens and sensor compared to Contour GPS.
The recording unit is big and it’s connected with the lens via a cable. It has a SD card slot where all your HD video footage gets stored.
On the back of the recording component you will find the battery compartment. The camera is powered by four AA batteries.
The memory card slot is covered with a very hard door. That door can be really problematic when you try to insert or remove the SD card because it’s almost impossible to remove with bare hands. You will need a screwdriver or coin to push open the door.
The manufacturer of POV HD also kept a screw lock system so that it never gets displaced.
The camera is made for outdoor usage, especially in tough weather condition. It is sturdy and waterproof. POV.HD may seem a little heavy but for that extra weight you will get a small LCD which will help you to get a quick review of the clippings during shooting.
In the menu, you will find many options to customize your video shooting preferences. It offers exposure settings, recording resolution, recording quality, volume levels etc.
It also shows an option to choose between MP4 and Quicktime format for the video encoding. You can choose any format you would like to store the video footage.
Performance
The POV.HD is a very professional camera and thus it offers several mounting options.
It comes in a large, zippered case with lots of choices for different mounts and zip-ties and double-sided tape.
The problem is, most of these mounts require a screwdriver to fix and unfortunately V.I.O did not include it in that huge case.
The easiest and most common mount is the helmet mount. To mount the camera on your helmet you can use either the double sided tape or some strong magnets.
First you need to attach the magnets to the helmet utilizing a bracket and some tape. There is also a standard threaded receiver that makes the mounting process easy. It lets you use a variety of mounts.
Once you are done with the mounting process and press the record button, you will be impressed beyond your expectation.
The V.I.O POV.HD captures amazing videos. The lens is really wide with 142 degrees. So it can capture a huge horizontal canvas and that too with excellent 1080p HD clarity.
It captures great video in low light too. The battery back up is solid three and a half hours. Compared to other cameras in this segment it surely scores above the rest.
Final Verdict
The V.I.O POV.HD is the best POV camera at the moment. You won’t get this much bright video in any other camera.
The price tag is surely a concern for many, especially because the Contour GPS and other such cameras come at half the price. But the video clarity and battery life are the two things that concern the adventure lovers the most, and hopefully these two USP are enough for any adventurer to spend $600 for V.I.O POV.HD.
