Motorola Backflip on AT&T's network starting March 7

AT&T Inc. on Thursday announced that it will be rolling out its first Android-based smartphone—Motorola Backflip, starting March 7, 2010.

The Motorola Backflip phone has been designed with a touch panel and a keyboard, which is revealed when the phone flips open. It stays inactive when the phone is folded and closed.

According to David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, "Motorola Backflip brings together the best of social networking with the nation's fastest 3G network.”

The AT&T second largest carrier in the nation also announced four more phones that will be arriving shortly on its network. These include two Palm webOS phones and a few with Windows 7.

With the announcement, AT&T has joined the growing list of wireless carriers who have embraced Google’s Android operating system based phones in the recent months.

Motorola Backflip features:
- 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash.

- 1400 mAh battery; talk time up to 6 hours; standby time up to 13.5 days (315 hours).

- Weight’s 4.7 oz; size: 53.0 by 108.0 by 15.3 mm (H X W X D).

- Accelerometer, E-compass and a GPS.

- A microSD slot with preinstalled 2GB memory, expandable up to 32GB.

- A USB 2.0 slot.

- A 3.1-inch HVGA (320 by 480 pixels) high-resolution touch screen display.

- Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g). AT&T’s more than 20,000 customers will receive AT&T Wi-Fi access at the U.S. hotspots.

- A full HTML browser and Backtrack that allow users to navigate through Web sites, e-mails, menus etc by using a touch panel behind the screen without blocking any part of the screen.

- Playable music and video formats: AAC, H.263, H.264, MP3, MPEG-4, WAV, MIDI, AAC+. Video captures at the rate of 24 frames per seconds.

- A 3.5 mm headset jack.

- Text and multimedia messaging; POP3/IMAP embedded; Push Gmail; Corporate e-mail synch; Google Talk and IM (AIM, Live, Yahoo).

Price and availability of Motorola Backflip
As mentioned above the Motorola Backflip will be made available nationwide, starting March 7 for the price tag of $99.99 after paying $100 mail-in-rebate, and with two-year agreement and smartphone data plan.
