Review: Modern Warfare 2

Infinity Ward once again has shown how good they can be at creating war based games. Its new addition “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2”, in the long running franchise of “Call of Duty”, is proving to be quite a grosser all across the world.

According to the game publisher Activision, the game has managed to earn more than $550 million in just five days globally, since its Nov. 10 release on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

According to the game publisher Activision, the game has managed to earn more than $550 million in just five days globally, since its Nov. 10 release on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

With its stunning graphics, over-the-top advertising, and a soundtrack compiled by Hans Zimmer, the “Modern Warfare 2” has turned into some kind of social phenomenon world over.

The new “MW2” is quite similar to the first one, but some new things have been added to it. The noticeable difference between the two is the content.

The sequel lacks memorable and interesting missions; seems like Infinity Ward had spent short time searching for new ideas for it and simply increased the action level.

MOD2 plot: game starts from where it left before
The new franchise “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” picks up five years after the first game left-off. In Russia, the ultranationalists have gained power and a failed CIA mission ends with a dead American framed in the charges of airport massacre.

The whole plot revolves around sparking World War III between Russia and United States. The player, either as a Task Force 141 operator or as a U.S. Army Ranger, races around the world, fighting in places ranging from Rio de Janeiro to the streets of Washington D.C.

Unfortunately single player is unfairly short. But the multiplayer and Special Ops modes managed to live up to the expectations. Special Ops is a new co-op mode giving the player the choice from 23 different scenarios independent of the main campaign.

If evaluated purely from technical point of view then it seems impeccable. The sound quality is absolutely amazing, but graphics could have been updated a little more.

The game is insanely addictive, filled with faster and deadlier campaign. By killing enemies, completing challenges, and accomplishing objectives, player can increase level and can unlock new guns, equipment, and skill-boasting perks.

Aliens and zombies considered for MOD 2
Though there are no zombies or fighting aliens in “Modern Warfare 2”, writer of the popular game, Jesse Stern, said in an interview that Infinity Ward toyed with the idea of adding wide variety of foes in the sequel, including zombies and aliens.

"In the beginning we talked about having things in Modern Warfare 2 like outbreaks, viruses, chemical warfare, and even outlandish things such as aliens and the living dead," Stern told GamePro.

"We worked our way through it before we finally ended up with a more grounded version of the real world as it's depicted in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. And as we were kicking around scenarios for conflict, we kept stumbling into things that were happening in real life, which was honestly unintentional."

Some of the scenes were inspired by the real-life events during MOD 2’s development, like the terrorist attack on Mumbai and the Russian invasion of Georgia.

But the Russian bit seemed to hit the raw nerve with the Russian government. For that Stern added, “We didn't intend on doing anything ripped straight from real headlines or based directly on current events. We did want to capture that feeling of unimaginable scenarios that are prevalent, but so distant from the psyche on any given day."

All in all, it’s a good game, and will at least keep you entertained for days, if not for years.
