Since then, the demand for the device has increased and the company is not sure whether everyone who pre-ordered one will get one on time, hence the delay.
It will be shipped from Dec. 18 till Jan. 8, as reported by the Sony Corp. sources. But dates are still not confirmed and might change, much to the disappointment of the eager fans waiting to get their hands on the reading device during holiday season.
Tough competition in store for Amazon’s Kindle?
It’s been years since Sony has been selling eReaders in the market, but this product category has truly been popularized by the Amazon’s Kindle.
Amazon’s Kindle eReader might have some competition from not just Sony Corp.’s high-profile eReader—the Daily Edition but from Barnes and Noble’s (B&N) the Nook, two other companies also looking forward to making some profit during holiday season.
But since Sony is getting delayed, it leaves Kindle in a strong position. An Amazon spokesman has said that the device is very much in stock and can be available for shipment immediately. The newest Kindle by Amazon is also priced same as the Nook at $259.
Barnes and Noble had made it clear last week that it has placed its latest orders for the Nook eReader priced at $259, which will begin shipping by Dec. 18. B&N adding further that consumers’ can expect it by Christmas.
Meanwhile both Sony and B&N are shying away from disclosing the number of pre-orders received or the number of devices that will be available around holiday season.
Price and availability of Sony’s Daily Edition
As told by a Sony spokesman, this new device will be sold on “first come, first serve basis” and is priced at $399.
The company has also unveiled two other eReaders, but the Daily Edition will be its first eReader with built-in wireless connectivity allowing over-the-book downloads.
By adding the wireless connectivity along with a seven-inch touch-screen display, Sony has tried its best to close the distance between itself and Amazon, which was already offering wireless access.
The Sony’s spokesman, Kyle Austin, wrote to Reuter, "The number of people that signed up ... to be notified of the Daily's availability exceeded our expectations over the last few months and we expect high demand now that it's available."
On the Web site www.sonystyle.com, a notice says that it will start shipping pre-orders from Dec. 18, 2009 to Jan. 8, 2010, with no mention of exact delivery date.
Following Kindle’s footsteps, the Daily Edition by Sony will not be charging monthly or transactional fees from its users.
If the predictions by the Industry experts are to be believed, these devices offered by B&N, Amazon, and Sony and others might be the most sought after electronic gadgets on Christmas.
