The most popular game is no longer available for the Sony PlayStation and the Microsoft X-box 360 owners in Russia, despite the game having arrived in stores early last week.
According to a fan site Hellforge, a Russian game site, all the copies of the controversial game-- the console version-- have been recalled from the stores shelves on Friday, and government has told the distributors to stop the outflow of the new stock.
Russian government’s objection
This step was reportedly taken by the government due to a controversial scene in the Modern Warfare 2, where the protagonist participates in a lethal airport attack in Moscow.
The Modern Warfare 2 shows a fictional organization tricking Russian government into attacking United States, so without a doubt the game is not pro-Russia.
The game’s content has raised Russian politicians’ ire because of the scenes where its armed forces are shown invading the United States and setting up a statue of a dead terrorist in Washington D.C., portraying Russian armed forces as terrorists.
Infinity Ward’s move after the reported ban
The Infinity Ward in the wake of this new development has decided to release a patch for the PC and Steam versions of the game that “entirely removes” the controversial mission from the game.
But Russian government’s approval is still pending on this censored version of the Modern Warfare 2. It could be released next month but nothing is sure yet.
It’s hard to imagine that Infinity Ward had no idea whatsoever that someone somewhere might get offended by portrayal of Russians in such villainous light.
Some might get confused that Russian politicians are losing their cool over a game which is widely popular for its violent play. To them, it might seem like Russian politicians are giving a game too much importance as it’s just a fictional story, nothing more than that.
But the Russian politicians are obviously really offended by the game portraying their nation in such bad light and making the U.S. look better.
The reported ban on the game is yet to be confirmed though.
