It’s the fifth game in the franchise, challenging the records set by blockbuster releases from the series “Grand Theft Auto”.
The Modern Warfare 2 is the follow-up of the 2007’s Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, representing Infinity Ward’s shift of venue from the battlefields of the World War 2 to modern combat.
PopSci's Jake Ward reports that the game is incredibly violent and also sets a new bar for realism. "This really is an amazing game. It's really all encompassing, it's full of tension and cinematic devices that really draw your attention in," Ward says. "I think this game is one of the rare games that has an incredible amount of hype surrounding it and really delivers in the end.”
The sequel re-acquaints the player with Soap MacTavish, as he and his squad attempt to hunt down the terrorist Vladimir Makarov. During the single player campaign, players will assume the two roles—fighting as a soldier in Soap’s squad and as a member of army ranger.
The campaign in Modern Warfare 2 is short and tight much like Call of Duty 4 and wraps up in about six hours.
Players already familiar with the first Modern Warfare would definitely be able to jump into the new sequel pretty easily. The game starts with training exercise and obstacle course to make the player familiar with the controls. Once completed, it decides the best difficulty settings and players can move on to their first mission.
Astounding visuals
Good thing for the game lovers is this that the visuals of the game are astonishing. Some of the visuals heighten the unease while playing because the game looks incredibly realistic.
With the Modern Warfare franchise, Infinity Ward has not shied away from portraying uncomfortable moments, like the Middle East battle fields in COD4 made up the images of the Iraq war.
It all leaves the player on the edge of their seats with the seriously reported terror attack inside the Russian airport. It feels strange watching soldiers move through residential areas, finding shelter in a fast food restaurant as enemies close in on them, and clearing foreign soldiers’ homes etc.
Each environment and surroundings--from the Favelas of Brazil to snowy mountains in the Eastern Europe and a war torn Washington DC—is captured with intricate detail.
Infinity Ward has effectively managed to capture the combat environments filled with intensity and chaos really well.
