Four killed in Pakistan blast

Islamabad, June 30: At least four people were killed and three wounded Tuesday in a blast at a petrol pump in Pakistan's southwestern Balochistan province, TV reports said.

According to Geo TV, the blast occurred in a car parked at a petrol pump in the Sorab area.

The police have cordoned off the area and begun an investigation.

Taliban scraps peace deal, vows more attacks on Pakistani forces

Islamabad, June 30: The Taliban has declared an end to the peace deal it signed with the Pakistani government last year due to the ongoing military operation in northwest Pakistan.

The Taliban made the announcement Monday after a meeting of the group's local shura (council) in North Waziristan, the website of the Dawn newspaper said.

On Feb 17 last year, the group signed a nine-point agreement with the government to restore peace in the area.

Taliban spokesperson Ahmadullah Ahmadi told reporters over the phone that the shura had decided to continue its offensive against the Pakistani security forces till the government stops the drone attacks and withdraws its troops from the North Waziristan region.

Pakistan to start production of JF-17 combat jets

Islamabad, June 30: Pakistan will begin production of JF-17 thunder jets, a lightweight multi-role combat aircraft, in collaboration with China, the Online news agency reported Tuesday.

The countries signed an agreement in March for the production of 42 JF-17 fighters at the Pakistan Aeronautical complex in Kamra in Punjab province. Some parts of the aircraft would also be manufactured in China.

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plans to raise its first squadron of JF-17 jets by the end of this year, sources said.

Senior Pakistani and Chinese officials will participate in a ceremony Tuesday to commence the production of the aircraft.

In the past, Pakistan has received eight JF-17 jets from China.

Meeting with India's foreign minister positive: Pakistan

Islamabad, June 26: Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi Friday termed as "positive" his meeting with his Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna in Italy, saying "all issues were discussed in a cordial and friendly atmosphere".

"I am hopeful that both countries will soon restart the composite dialogue as it is the only sensible way to move forward," a private TV channel quoted Qureshi as saying.

Both foreign ministers are in Trieste for a G8 outreach conference.

India has repeatedly stated that the dialogue process, frozen in the wake of the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, can resume only after Islamabad takes credible action against the alleged Pakistani perpetrators of the carnage.

Talks with India unavoidable, says Pakistan

Islamabad, June 26: Pakistan seriously believes that composite dialogue is in the interest of both India and Pakistan, foreign office spokesman Abdul Basit said here Thursday.

"Talks are unavoidable for durable peace and prosperity in the region," Basit said at a weekly press briefing.

India halted the dialogue process with Pakistan following the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008, in which at least 170 people were killed and 300 others wounded.

Basit said Pakistan is proceeding in the matter of Mumbai attacks effectively and methodically.

US wants lasting partnership with Pakistan, says officia

Islamabad, June 26: Visiting US National Security Advisor Gen. James L. Jones said his country was committed to a long-term partnership with Pakistan.

Jones made the remarks after meeting top Pakistani civilian and military officials in the past two days.

His two-day visit to the country focused on implementing President Barak Obama's "comprehensive regional engagement strategy while strengthening the US-Pakistan relationship", a statement issued by the American embassy here said.

Pakistan vows to hunt down Taliban chief

Islamabad, June 26: Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Tehreek-e-Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud will be killed whenever the security forces find him.

Mehsud was involved in the murder of several innocent people, Rehman said.

He added that Swat and Buner regions in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) have now been cleared of terrorists and the displaced people would soon start returning to their homes there.

"We are importing scanners from China which would be installed in the cities where there are chances of terrorist activities," the Online news agency said Friday citing Malik.

Taliban commander among six killed in Pakistan

Islamabad, June 26: At least six militants, including a Taliban commander, were killed in two separate clashes in northwest Pakistan, Geo TV said Friday.

The report said the security forces bombed two Taliban hideouts Thursday in the Chapri Feroz Khel and Atman Khel areas, killing at least six militants including a local Taliban commander.

In separate developments Thursday, the Pakistani forces also captured several Taliban militants during fighting in Orakzai, South Waziristan and Kurrum regions, officials said.

Pakistan to probe illegal arms sale in the country

Islamabad, June 26: The Pakistani government has decided to issue notices to arms dealers for information regarding sale of weapons to unauthorised people as part of a move to stop the illegal weapon sale in the country, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said.

The licenses of the dealers will be cancelled if they fail to act on the government directive, the Online news agency said Friday citing Malik.

The ministry has also decided to form a special committee to study the proposed amendments in the explosives act, the report said.

Malik urged the law enforcement agencies to monitor illegal arms sale and file cases against dealers, who are involved in selling arms to militants under the anti-terrorist act.
