Kurds bracing for Iraq's election season

Erbil, Iraq -- Members of a major Kurdish political party in Iraq complain rivals are launching attacks on its members as the country braces for March parliamentary elections.

Unknown assailants gunned down a member of the Change List, a major Kurdish political party in Iraq, in late December, leaving party members infuriated.

Babekir Daraei, a leading official in the Change List, told the Iraqi analytical Web site Niqash the attacks were politically motivated.

"The recent events are very much linked to the electoral competition," he said. "There is lots of injustice practiced against the Change Movement in Kurdistan."

Dropping of Blackwater charges angers Iraq

Baghdad -- The U.S. judge who tossed charges against five Blackwater guards in a Baghdad shooting effectively let them get away with murder, Iraqi officials said Friday.

Hassan Jabbar Salman, one of more than 20 people wounded in the September 2007 gunfire in Baghdad's Nisour Square that left 17 people dead, said District Judge Ricardo Urbina's ruling Thursday demonstrated "disregard for Iraqi blood," CNN reported.

"Investigations carried out by specialized Iraqi authorities unequivocally found that the Blackwater guards committed murder and broke use-of-force rules when there was no threat requiring the use of force," Ali al-Dabbagh, a government spokesman, said.

Astronauts link with troops in Iraq

Baghdad -- U.S. astronauts wished Army troops in Baghdad a happy new year while flying over Iraq aboard the International Space Station, NASA said.

Jeff Williams and T.J. Creamer spoke with soldiers Tuesday for 20 minutes via a satellite link from 220 miles above the Earth.

"There's not a day goes by when we don't remember the service and the
sacrifice that so many of you are making over there," Williams said, bobbing in weightlessness alongside Creamer.

Williams and Creamer, both Army colonels, had requested the video and audio link with U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq, NASA officials said.

Foreign companies get Iraq oil contracts

Baghdad -- The Iraqi government said Saturday international oil companies received seven oil field contracts out of a possible 10.

Among the awarded oil fields were Iraq's Majnoon and West Qurna Phase 2 sites.

A consortium involving the Russian oil company, Lukoil Holdings, was given the contract to West Qurna Phase 2. Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Malaysia's Petronas oil and gas company were awarded Majnoon.

Petronas, along with France's Total and the China National Petroleum Corp., were awarded the Halfaya oil field.

The Journal said Shahristani announced Iraq is prepared to once again join the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries quota system regarding oil production.

Car bombings in Baghdad leave 101 dead

Baghdad, December 8 -- The violence in Iraq got worse as four car bombs exploded in Baghdad this morning, all aimed at government buildings.

Exxon-Shell awarded Iraqi oil deal

Baghdad -- The Iraqi Oil Ministry granted Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell the rights to the West Qurna-1 oil field, awarding the contract over two other bids.

Lukoil, a Russian firm, along with ConocoPhillips submitted a bid for development rights, as did CNPC, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Aside from Occidental Petroleum Corp.'s involvement as a junior partner in a Eni SpA-led proposal granted a contract for oil development in Southern Iraq a week ago, the new deal is the first access to its oil reserves Iraq has given to a U.S. company.

The deal requires approval from the Iraqi cabinet, said oil ministry spokesman Assem Jihad.

Alternative energy at Iraqi checkpoints

Baghdad -- Coalition forces engineers say they're meeting electricity challenges in remote areas of Iraq by building alternative energy systems for border checkpoints.

The engineers are partnering with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fund and build alternative energy systems for border security facilities in remote locations, the U.S. military said Tuesday in a news release.

The engineering team designed a system that leverages solar panels and a large wind turbine, which they call "energy in a box," for a checkpoint southeast of Baghdad. The wind turbine and solar panels are connected to a switch gear so both power sources can generate electricity, depending on the environmental conditions, the military said.

Once fertile Iraq becoming a desert

Baghdad -- Iraq is on the brink of an environmental catastrophe thanks to decades of war, mismanagement and drought, environmentalists say.

Near daily dust storms, and shriveling riverbeds and marshes are turning arable land into desert, killing trees and plants, and transforming what was once the region's most fertile soil into an agricultural wasteland, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

"We're talking about something that's making the breadbasket of Iraq look like the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma in the early part of the 20th century," said Adam Silverman, a social scientist with the U.S. military who served south of Baghdad in 2008.

Oil auction in Iraq nets just one deal

Baghdad -- An all-day auction for eight oil development contracts in Iraq fell short of expectations with only one contract signed, the Iraqi Oil Ministry said.

A partnership between British Petroleum and the China National Petroleum Corp., secured a contract to develop Iraq's biggest oil field, Rumaila, which has an estimated 17 billion barrels of oil, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

But the deal required the companies to accept a fee of $2 per barrel for every barrel they extract from the field between the current output of 1 million barrels a day to a benchmark of 2.85 million barrels a day.

17 dead, dozens injured in Baghdad bomb blast

Baghdad, June 26: At least 17 people were killed and 45 injured Friday in a motorbike bomb explosion in central Baghdad, authorities said.

The motorbike, packed with explosives, went off in a market that sells motorcycles in Bab al-Sheikh area.

The attack comes a few days before the US withdrawal from the Iraqi cities.

It also comes after a series of deadly explosions ripped through the Iraqi capital Baghdad in the past few days.

On Thursday, nine people, including four civilians, were killed in two bombings in Iraq.

On Wednesday a devastating bomb attack at a market in Sadr City killed 74, and injured hundreds.
