Nassau, Bahamas, August 24: Once again the Latina beauties dominated the beauty pageant. In a back to back win Venezuelan Stefania Fernandez clinched the Miss Universe title from under the nose of 83 gorgeous women.
Draped in a flowing red gown, the 18-year-old Stefania Fernandez became the 58th winner of the title. Since this was the second consecutive win for the country, Fernandez was crowned by her predecessor Dayana Mendoza, another Venezuelan beauty.
Fernandez defeated finalists from Puerto Rico (Mayra Matos Perez), Dominican Republic (Ada Aimee de la Cruz), Kosovo (Droga Ganusha), and Australia (Rachael Finch) to earn the crown for 2009.
Miss China, Wang Jingyao, was named Miss Congeniality and Miss Thailand, Chutima Durongdej, won Miss Photogenic.
The Latin American country Venezuela, famed for its beautiful women has established itself as the beauty capital of the world. The nation has bagged 6 Miss Universe titles, 5 Miss World titles, and 4 Miss International titles.
Perks with the title
Besides the prestigious title, Fernandez will be bestowed with a New York City apartment for the year of her reign along with living expenses. In addition she is entitled to a two-year scholarship at the New York Film Academy; a vacation for two in the Bahamas, and a well stocked wardrobe including jewelry.
The pageant of 2009
The Miss Universe pageant in its 59th year had women participating from 83 countries. The various stages of the competition were held on different islands in the Bahamas.
The grand finale was hosted by Celebrity Apprentice star Claudia Jordan and Access Hollywood co-anchor Billy Bush. The event judged by a 12-member panel comprised of swimsuit, evening gown and interview rounds.
It also included performances by rapper Flo Rida, singers David Guetta, Kelly Rowland and reality star Heidi Montag who entertained for the first time live with the song "Body Language" from her upcoming first album.

Stefanía Fernández, the tall and stunning brunette won the Miss Venezuela title in September 2008. Before that she was Miss Trujill. She is of mixed racial heritage with Russian, Ukrainian, Galician and Polish ancestors, which perhaps contributes to her unique looks.
Fernandez is a devout Catholic, and “meeting the Pope” is one of her dreams in life. She is the youngest of three children and enjoys playing tennis and swimming.
