Bellmore, N.Y. -- A judge in New York state set bail at $2,500 cash Tuesday for Jonathan Carter, a former NFL wide receiver charged with assault.
Carter allegedly attacked a girlfriend Sunday night, dragged her down a flight of stairs and across a parking lot, the New York Daily News reported. The assault took place at a house in Bellmore on Long Island.
He also allegedly harassed the woman by calling her 37 times on her cell phone after the attack.
A judge ordered Carter to stay away from his girlfriend and to turn in his gun. He is charged with assault, stalking and menacing.
Carter, who gave an address in Lineville, Ala., was drafted by the New York Giants in 2001 after starring at Troy University. He was picked up by the New York Jets in 2002 and spent four years with the team. Most recently, he was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
