The astronauts added a holder for three tools under the 3,400-pound robot’s right arm and cameras around its waist area. These will serve as robot’s eyes. This was the third spacewalk of the five scheduled spacewalks.

Dextre a short form for ‘dexterous’ has a sense of touch and is capable of sensing force and movement.

The gigantic robot once fully assembled, Dextre can take care of certain routine maintenance tasks that have been performed by space-walkers till now.

This will help the astronauts to devote more time to experiments and other scientific activities inside the space station and save all the dangerous effort of a spacewalk to carry out simple tasks like replacing batteries and wires.

Last Friday, the astronauts had used the space station's mechanical arm to grab onto Dextre and supply electricity to the machine's various joints and electronics. The robot had been lying inactive outside the orbiting complex for nearly two days.

Linnehan, who was also a member of the mission's first two spacewalks, said it was fantastic to work around the gigantic white robot. It reminds him of a prop from a "Star Wars" movie.

"But it isn't sci-fi, its reality, and it's happening up here right now," he said.

The $209 million robot, which has passed initial operating tests, will be attached to the station’s Destiny laboratory module.

An experiment designed to expose a variety of materials and coatings to the space environment will be done later in the spacewalk.

The other purpose of Endeavour's crew was to drop off a storage compartment for the Japanese orbital lab named Kibo. The astronauts who are not involved with the spacewalks like Japanese astronaut Takao Doi continued to work on setting up Kibo's logistics module, transferring supplies and equipment into it from Endeavour's cargo bay.

The main part of the Kibo lab will be launched on the next shuttle mission in May.

The shuttle Endeavour had blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on March 11 and is scheduled to land back on Earth on March 26.
