Hardcore Facebook fans can now pre-order the new HTC Status, a sleek handset, which is coming with a dedicated button for the social network, on AT&T's website.

The new smartphone, priced at $49.99 with a two-year contract and ($15 on up) monthly data plan, is all set to hit the AT&T and Best Buy stores on July 17.

Jeff Bradley, AT&T senior VP of devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, stated, “We can’t wait to put the HTC Status in the hands of our young customers who will waste no time tapping into Facebook to update their friends.

“We’re also really pleased to offer the hottest new smartphone at an affordable price to this important, socially savvy youth market.”

HTC Status, formerly known as the HTC Chacha, is the first AT&T phone to run on the Android Gingerbread software platform.

It is powered by a single-core, 800 MHz processor, a 512 MB of memory and has a microSD card support for expansion.

Other features found in the smartphone include a QWERTY keypad, a 2.6-inch touchscreen display with 480×320 resolution, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, and a VGA front-facing camera for video chat.

The device also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G connectivity and GPS.

The handset is available in four colors: black, silver, pink and blue at AT&T, but Best Buy will also offer the device in mauve color.

A dedicated Facebook share button
The special feature of Status is a dedicated button fashioned after the facebook logo.

The little blue button that rests below the phone's physical keyboard when pressed helps to access your Facebook account.

The button lights up when there is an activity to share. Basically, whatever the user is doing at the moment, whether listening to music, flipping through pictures, or surfing the web, it can be posted directly to the social networking site.

After taking a picture or video, you can share the results on your own Facebook wall or a friend’s wall by simply pressing the Facebook button.

The Status also features a Facebook chat application that allows you to carry on your chat conversations even when you turn away to attend a call, browse the net or play a game. The chat widget also shows who is available to chat.
