Regular fasting may prevent heart disease, diabetes--study

Researchers found that skipping meals through out the day increased human growth hormone, (HGH), the hormone responsible for speeding up metabolism and burning fat.

Here's another benefit of fasting. It not only cleanses digestive system but also lowers the risk of heart disease, states a new study.

The recent research published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) states that regular fasting improves heart health. It reduces the risk of coronary artery disease and diabetes.

"We've shown it is not a chance finding. Fasting is not just an indicator for other healthy lifestyles. It is actually the fasting that is working to reduce the risk of disease," stated Lead Researcher Benjamin D. Horne, director of cardiovascular and genetic epidemiology at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute.

To reach the study findings, researchers at the medical center's Heart Institute monitored more than 200 people in the state of Utah, where people fast for at least one day in month.

They found that about 75 percent who did not fast had narrow arteries. Further, 63 percent had clogged arteries.

To ensure that findings were not due to the fact that people who fasted had healthy lifestyle, researchers conducted another study on those who did not fast regularly.

These people were told to fast on 24 hours. The changes in the body's biological mechanisms were also recorded.

The hormone increased around 1,300 percent in women, and nearly 2,000 percent in men.

Though the findings suggest that fasting is good for heart, scientists are not recommending fasting as more research is needed to fully know the effects on human body.

“The confirmation among a new set of patients that fasting is associated with lower risk of these common diseases raises new questions about how fasting itself reduces risk or if it simply indicates a healthy lifestyle.”

How fasting benefits?
Explaining the reason behind this, Dr. Horne stated that fasting causes hunger and stress. As a result, the body releases more cholesterol, which uses fat as fuel source instead of glucose.

"This is important because the fewer fat cells a body has, the less likely it will experience insulin resistance or diabetes," added Dr. Horne.

Though the findings suggest that fasting is good for heart, scientists are not recommending fasting as more research is needed to fully know the effects on human body.

The researchers have received grants for future studies and they are planning to use the money to conduct research on patients who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular problems.
