Fruta Planta weight loss products recalled for lethal ingredient

The FDA stated that PRock Marketing wants the consumers to know that “there is NO SAFE formula on the US market and that all versions of Fruta Planta contain Sibutramine.”

Looking forward to shed weight this New Year with the help of weight loss products? Well, you will have one less to choose from, as PRock Marketing, the authorized U.S. distributor of Fruta Planta and Reduce Weight Fruta Planta, has issued a voluntary recall of their products.

The recall comes in wake of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) warning that the PRock Marketing's two dietary weight loss supplements, touted as “natural organic solution to SIMPLE, FAST weight loss” contain sibutramine, a banned drug.

Sibutramine was withdrawn from the market in December 2010 after a clinical study proved that it increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke.

The FDA stated that PRock Marketing wants the consumers to know that “there is NO SAFE formula on the US market and that all versions of Fruta Planta contain Sibutramine.”

FDA tests confirm sibutramine presence
Though the company has not received any complaints of illnesses or injuries in connection with the products, the U.S. health agency had received reports confirming that Fruta Planta and Reduce Weight Fruta Planta were associated with several heart attacks and one death.

Following these complaints, it conducted a test which confirmed that weight loss supplements contain 15.4 mg of undeclared sibutramine.

Fruta Planta's sites no where mentions that the products have sibutramine. In fact, it states that Fruta Planta is a 100 percent natural product and is made up of common fruits and vegetables, which include lemon, bitter melon, payaya, mangosteen, pirulina maxima, and fruit gum.

The FDA in its press release stated, “Fruta Planta and Reduce Weight Fruta Planta poses a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a serious risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or stroke.”

Recommendations for consumers
Considering the study findings that Fruta Planta contains sibutramine, the FDA has advised the consumers to immediately stop consuming these weight loss supplements.

Though the company has not received any complaints of illnesses or injuries in connection with the products, the U.S. health agency had received reports confirming that the Fruta Planta and Reduce Weight Fruta Planta were associated with several heart attacks and one death.

In case consumers have “experienced any negative side effects,” they should immediately consult a health-care professional.

If consumers are throwing away the products, they should seal it properly so that children and pets do not get access to it. Also, they can reach PRock at 1-877-225-1009 for further details on the recall.

Both the products, under recall, were repackaged as 30-capsule boxes. They were sold through the internet.
