Three party system? Possible, says Thune

Washington-- Sen. John Thune, R-S.D. said disaffected U.S. voters could form a splinter group after the midterm elections if Republicans let them down.

"I will say this: If we do not govern according to our principles and if we don't follow through on the things we say we're going to do, I think there will be a third party in this country," he said on C-Span's "Newsmakers" program.

"If we don't govern accordingly, I think you're going to see a third party in this country," he said in the taped television interview reported by The Hill
Thune said the Tea Party could be the foundation of a third party, as the group, he said, did not want to align themselves directly with the GOP.

"I don't think the Tea Party wants to be adopted. I think they view themselves as a very independent movement," he said.
