NYC offers deal on parking fines

New York -- Although generally unnoticed by the public, New York City will sharply reduce most parking fines if the driver questions the ticket, officials say.

The discount has been on the books for almost three years but most people, some 80 percent by city estimates, pay the whole amount, The New York Times said Friday.

Any driver who challenges a parking ticket in person, in writing or online, is usually offered a substantial, guaranteed reduction under a program quietly introduced in 2005.

For example, says the Times, if a person pleads guilty to parking at an expired meter in Midtown and agree to forgo a hearing, the city will immediately reduce the fine from $65 to $43 in most cases.

Officials say the plan, though often overlooked, has enabled the city to reduce the cost of having hearings on the 10 million tickets it issues each year.
