Newark, N.J. -- Martin Brodeur made 25 saves while establishing an NHL longevity record Friday and carrying the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders.

Brodeur made his 14th consecutive season-opening start for the Devils, the longest such stretch with one team in league history. He had previously shared the record with Chicago's Tony Esposito.

The Devils have never lost a season opener played at home, improving to 12-0-5 in such games.

Patrik Elias scored the eventual game-winner and Zach Parise produced the other New Jersey goal.

The game marked the NHL coaching debut for the Islanders' Scott Gordon.

Elias scored his goal just 29 seconds into the second period, putting a back-hander into the net off a feed from Brian Gionta.

New Jersey defeated the Islanders just once last season in eight meetings.
