To boost up the vaccination drive statewide against flu, Gov. David Paterson signed legislation allowing pharmacists to give flu and pneumonia shots.
The Governor confirmed his action on Friday stating that this change is expected to increase the number of adults benefiting from the vaccination in the state.
He also declared measures to protect health insurance for retired municipal workers against possible cuts for a year and also to permit increases in college students' Tuition Assistance Program awards after a semester is commenced.
New York pharmacists with complete state training and certification will be permitted to give the shots with a prescription from a physician or nurse practitioner starting December 4.
According to the State Education Department data for 2008, there are 20,303 state-licensed pharmacists.
"Allowing pharmacists to immunize would increase access to vaccinations as pharmacies are open long hours, on weekends and most holidays," said Sen. Charles Fuschillo, a Long Island Republican who sponsored the bill.
According to some health experts, the bill could increase the number of New York City seniors who get vaccinated by more than 50,000. The city Health Department has urged representatives to pass the law.
Paterson showed his strong support for providing public retirees with affordable and quality health care.
Assembly sponsors stated that every state except Maine allows the vaccinations already. Studies showed great improvement in immunization rates after such changes.
