New York -- U.S. stock indexes closed mixed Friday with active trading in the financial sector.
The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. closed 8.04 percent ahead Friday. The Federal National Mortgage Association climbed 25.16 percent. Citigroup was up 7.68 percent and shares of Washington Mutual were up 19.24 percent.
By close Friday, the Dow Jones industrial average had gained 49.91 points to 11,496.57, up 0.44 percent. The Standard and Poor's 500 index added 0.36 points to 1,260.68, up 0.03 percent. The Nasdaq composite index fell 1.28 percent, down 29.52 points to 2,282.78.
On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,686 stocks advanced and 1,459 declined on a volume of 1.709 billion shares traded.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 27/32 to yield 4.099 percent.
The euro traded at $1.5845 from Thursday's $1.5833, while the dollar traded at 106.94 yen from Thursday's 106.70 yen.
In Tokyo, the Nikkei index lost 84.25 points to 12,803.70, off 0.65 percent.
In London, the FTSE 100 index gained 90.10 to 5,376.40, up 1.7 percent.
