The American trials, viewed in the world of track and field as the most competitive meet on the planet, will be held this year at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

Three U.S. athletes will earn spots on the team in each of the 45 disciplines during a meet that runs through July 6.

The only final scheduled for Friday will be in the women's 10,000-meter run.

Olympic team members will be selected Saturday in the heptathlon, women's 100 meter and men's shot-put.

Opening ceremonies for the Beijing Olympics will be held Aug. 8. The Games will run through Aug. 24.
