A.O. Smith water pump motors recalled

Washington -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of A.O. Smith water pump motors due to a fire hazard.

The water pumps involved in the recall are labeled as having a 1-horsepower motor but have 3/4-horsepower motors, a CPSC statement said. The smaller motors could overheat causing a fire hazard, CPSC said. No injuries have been reported.

About 6,500 of the water pumps, made by A.O. Smith Electrical Products Co. of Tipp City, Ohio, were sold from August 2007 through May 2008 for $500-$750.

The recall involves motors sold with lawn sprinkler pumps and jet pumps made by F.E. Myers Co. Replacement pumps, if sold separately, sold for $300-$400, CPSC said.

Consumers were advised to stop using the motors and contact the company for a free replacement.

Consumers can also call A.O. Smith at 800-280-8626 for information.
