London -- Queen Elizabeth II of England has formally appointed her grandson Prince William as Knight of the Garter at St. George's Chapel in Windsor.
The Telegraph said the prince is now a Royal Knight Companion and the 1,000th knight in the register.
William, who turns 26 Saturday, walked beside his father, Prince Charles, during the knights' traditional procession to the church and received the honor at a ceremony watched from the Galilee Porch entrance to the chapel by his girlfriend Kate Middleton, brother Prince Harry and stepmother Camilla.
This is believed to be the first official royal public event Middleton has attended, The Telegraph said.
