Report: Records show recruiting calls

Bloomington -- A report published Wednesday said cell phone records showed former Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson was participating banned recruiting calls.

Bloomington -- A report published Wednesday said cell phone records showed former Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson was participating banned recruiting calls.

The finding is significant because the records, obtained by the Indianapolis Star, clearly marked which calls made on a university-owned cell phone by former IU assistant men's basketball coach Rob Senderoff were three-way conversations that included now-fired head coach Sampson.

Sampson was banned from participating in such calls as a condition of earlier sanctions against him while coaching for the University of Oklahoma.

Indiana University is facing an NCAA disciplinary hearing on the matter Friday in Seattle, accused of major rules violations and of failure to monitor its men's basketball program properly.

The cell phone records cast doubt on Sampson's contention he was not aware he was participating in recruiting calls, The Star said. Sampson also contends that he was never made aware by school athletic officials of any problems until he was confronted by school officials.
