Russia beats Canada for hockey gold medalby MT Bureau - May 19, 2008 - 0 comments
Quebec City -- Ilya Kovalchuk scored in the third period and overtime, carrying Russia past Canada 5-4 Sunday in the gold medal game of the World Hockey Championship. The come-from-behind win at Quebec City gave the Russians their first world title since 1993. Kovalchuk tied the contest with 5:14 left in regulation and fired a power-play shot past Canadian goalie Cam Ward to win it 2:42 into the extra session. Canada, the defending champion, was trying for its fourth title in six years. Brent Burns, with two goals, Chris Kunitz and Dany Heatley scored for Canada.
