Los Angeles -- The science-fiction action-thriller "Iron Man" turned to gold in its opening weekend in U.S. theaters, Box Office Mojo reported Sunday.
Theater-goers shelled out an estimated $100.75 million to see Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Leslie Bibbs in the comic book-inspired movie about a wealthy industrialist-turned-super hero who battles the forces of Evil.
Another new movie, the romantic comedy "Made of Honor," starring Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan, brought in $15.5 million.
Last week's top show, "Baby Mama," was down to No. 3 with $10.33 million in estimated ticket sales, followed by "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," holding steady at No. 4 with $6.13 million, and "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay," at No. 5 with $6.02 million in estimated gate receipts.
Filling out the Top 10 were: "The Forbidden Kingdom," $4.2 million; "Nim's Island," $2.75 million; "Prom Night (2008)," $2.5 million; "21," $2.1 million; and "88 Minutes," $1.6 million.
Gone from the top tier were "Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who!" after eight weeks among the elite and one-week wonder "Deception (2008)."
