Hollywood, -- Bowl Championship Series officials announced Wednesday the method by which a college football titleholder is determined would remain unchanged.
Proposed changes would have created a four-team playoff using two BCS bowl games as national semifinals. That idea, however, was rejected by the 11 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences (previously Division I-A) and Notre Dame.
The decision keeps the current system in place until at least the start of the 2014 season, which will be the expiration date of the next BCS television contract.
The national championship game currently features the top two teams in the BCS standings, which are compiled using a collection of human and computer-generated polls.
In addition, the NCAA announced the addition of two bowl games for the 2008 and 2009 seasons, bringing the total of sanctioned games to 34.
The newcomers will be the St. Petersburg Bowl in Florida, bringing together teams from the Big East and Conference USA, and the Congressional Bowl in Washington, which is expected to feature a team from the Mid-American Conference or ACC meeting Army or Navy.
