No date was announced, but the Journal said its publisher, Robert Thomson, "may take over as interim managing editor."
Brauchli, who would not confirm his departure, would be leaving after 11 months on the job and five months after Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. purchased the Journal's owner, Dow Jones & Co., for $5.16 billion.
It is unclear whether Brauchli was resigning out of frustration with editorial changes made since December or whether he was being forced out, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
Since December, the Journal, with a daily circulation of more than 2 million -- the second largest among U.S. newspapers -- has shifted its focus away from business news to politics and general interest news, the Times reported.
Before working at the Journal, Thomson was managing editor of The Times of London, which is also owned by News Corp.
