Ex-Tigers pitcher McLain arrested

Brighton, Mich. -- Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain has been arrested in Michigan for not appearing at a civil court hearing, police say.

Sgt. Gary Harpe of the Hamburg Township Police Department said McLain was arrested on an outstanding warrant for allegedly missing a court date, while court officers from nearby counties searched his Hamburg Township home, The Detroit News reported Saturday.

"There was some kind of judgment made against Denny McLain and a warrant for failing to appear in Livingston County for a court hearing," Harpe said. "They were looking to forfeit any property belonging to him. Apparently he's indebted."

Court-appointed reviewer Stephen Cooper said the former Tigers standout, who was arrested Friday, was nearly $60,000 in debt.

"It's for all kinds of different things," Cooper said. "Not paying various bank credit cards, not paying for attorney fees. There is a judgment, he chose not to appeal it, so it's his obligation to pay for it."

McLain, 64, helped the Tigers win the 1968 World Series and was a two-time Cy Young winner. He had compiled a 131-91 record with a 3.39 ERA in a major league career with Detroit, Washington Senators, Oakland and Atlanta that spanned from 1963 to 1972.
