'Once' wins top prize at 2Morrow film fest

Moscow -- "Once" -- a Dublin-set, musical independent film by John Carney -- has won the top prize at Moscow's 2Morrow film festival, Variety.com reported Tuesday.

The honor came with a $100,000 cash prize.

Carney's film about a street musician (Glen Hansard) and the new friend (Marketa Irglova) who inspires him also won a story award.

The four-day festival, which ended Monday, was created as a means of promoting originality in filmmaking.

Estonia's "Magnus" by Kadri Kousaar won a prize in the sound category, while Japan's "Funuke Show Some Love You Losers!" by Daihachi Yoshida earned the image award.

Steve Buscemi and Sienna Miller, his co-star in "Interview" -- the English-language remake of Dutch director Theo Van Gogh's film -- shared the festival's acting prize.

"Interview," which Buscemi also directed, opened the festival.

"Duska," the latest offering from Dutch director Jos Stelling, was the event's closing feature.
