T-shirts mock Chicago Marathon's meltdownby MT Bureau - October 17, 2007 - 0 comments
Chicago -- More than a week after Chicago's Marathon was melted by high heat and problematic water supplies, a T-shirt has gone on sale poking fun at the event. Two unidentified Web site marketers in Oklahoma City, Okla., who ran in the Oct. 7 event told the Chicago Sun-Times they had commemorated race in which many runners complained of insufficient water supplies in 88-degree temperatures. The race was canceled after 3 1/2 hours. The front of their T-shirts reads: "The Thirst Annual Chicago Fun Run," beneath which says, "The marathon quit, but I didn't." The site says $4 of each $20 sale will go to the family of a 35-year-old Michigan police officer who collapsed and died at the halfway mark of the 26.2-mile race. An autopsy revealed a pre-existing heart condition. "Wear this shirt with pride and let those around you know that while the race got weird, you never quit," the Web site says. "At the same time, you will be helping the family of our fellow runner." By Monday night, the marketers said 300 shirts had been sold on the chicagofunrun.com site. © Copyright United Press International. Post new comment |
