Report: Steroid probe near an end

New York -- Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell will report on his baseball steroids investigation following the World Series, it was reported Friday.

New York -- Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell will report on his baseball steroids investigation following the World Series, it was reported Friday.

The New York Daily News said Mitchell held a conference call with Major League Baseball owners Friday and told them his report would be forwarded to them in November or December.

It has been 19 months since Commissioner Bud Selig asked Mitchell to investigate allegations of steroid use in the majors. Mitchell was asked specifically to look into charges made in the book, "Game of Shadows," that all-time home run record holder Barry Bonds has used performance-enhancing drugs.

In previous interviews, Mitchell has said he expects to name specific players in his report.

New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi is the only player known to have met with Mitchell during the probe.
