Los Angeles -- Hollywood actress Zoe Saldana is reportedly the first woman cast in the upcoming "Star Trek" movie.
The "Haven" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" star will play communications officer Lieutenant Uhura in the film, which will be directed by "Lost" and "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams, MTV.com has reported.
The role was played on the original "Star Trek" series and first six feature films by Nichelle Nichols.
"Heroes" star Zachary Quinto has signed on to play Spock, while "Alpha Dog" actor Anton Yelchin will play Chekov.
"Star Trek" icon Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, has signed on as well, leading to speculation that most of the new installment will take place in flashback, MTV.com said.
"Star Trek" is slated to land in U.S. theaters on Dec. 25, 2008.
