New York -- Officials at the U.S. Open said Wednesday Amelie Mauresmo, the seventh ranked player in the world, had withdrawn from the tournament.
Mauresmo is suffering from a right abductor strain and also recently underwent an appendectomy.
"My doctor has recommended that I allow myself additional time to rest and recover from this injury so that it is completely healed," Mauresmo said in a statement released by the United States Tennis Association. "Obviously, this is one of the worst times of the year for me to have an injury."
Mauresmo is looking for her first major title since winning last year's Australian Open and Wimbledon. She has never advanced past the semifinals at the U.S. Open.
