Montreal -- No. 1 seed Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick all reached the quarterfinals Thursday at the Rogers Masters in Montreal.

The event is the sixth of nine Masters Series tournaments this year.
Defending champion Federer coasted to a third-round victory over Fabio Fognini, 6-1, 6-1, in a match that took only 45 minutes to complete.

Nadal, seeded second, had a more difficult time reaching the quarterfinals, as he fought off Paul-Henri Mathieu, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Nadal won the Rogers event two years ago.

The fifth-seeded Roddick won the 400th match of his ATP career with a 6-2, 6-3, decision over Marcos Baghdatis. Roddick is coming off a tournament triumph at last week's stop in Washington.

Also reaching the quarterfinals were Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko, Radek Stepanek, Lleyton Hewitt and Frank Dancevic.
Federer will face Hewitt in the next round.
