London -- Satellite broadcaster Setanta said it will launch a sports channel on Virgin Media's digital TV platform, filling the gap left by Sky Sports News' departure.
When launched, Setanta Sports News will be free to Virgin Media's 3 million subscribers, Which? magazine reported. It will provide breaking sports news, commentary and analysis.
The channel will help fill the gap left when Sky Sport News was pulled from the cable platform in March, one of several Sky channels that faded to black after a dispute over how much Virgin paid Sky for the channels.
It was unclear when Setanta Sports News would debut.
Virgin Media said it also plans to launch an Internet sports portal Monday that will screen free highlights from all Barclays Premier League, Coca-Cola Championship, League 1 and League 2 matches, the magazine said.
