London -- A new database used by British police show Nike shoes are popular with criminals as they represent a large portion of shoeprints left at crime scenes.

Using its new Footwear Intelligence Technology system, Britain's Forensic Science Service found six of the top 10 shoeprints left at crime scenes are from Nike footwear, the Mirror reported Wednesday.

Tops among all criminals' footgear according to the new system was Nike's Air Max 95, with Reebok's Classic and Nike's Air Max Limited rounding out the top three respectively.
An FSS official said the findings could help improve police operations by offering another potential form of criminal identification.

Upon hearing of the system's findings, Nike issued a statement regarding the apparent popularity of its products among the criminal population.

"We are Britain's best-selling trainer manufacturer so we're not surprised we feature," the shoe company said. "We've no further comment."
