Buzz has it that an expansion of Surface tablet franchise might be in the works at Microsoft and we shall see a range of devices getting rolled out in the current year.
Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein stopped just short of revealing details, but reiterated that the company is going to expand Surface tablet lineup.
While responding to a question, Klein said, "We had limited distribution this quarter in our stores and we're excited about expanding that [distribution].”
Klein went on to hint that a major expansion in terms of product line up and retail distribution might be in the offing. “We're going to expand geographically, we're going to expand the product lineup, we're going to expand retail distribution and capacity," he said.
Until recently, Microsoft devices used to be available only at its flagship brick-and-mortar stores and its online store. It has recently partnered with a couple of retailers for selling its devices. Microsoft might be working on more such partnerships in near future.
Klein stressed that Surface tablet continues to bring a great deal of revenue, though he did not disclose any numbers. "Certainly this quarter it was a contributing factor to revenue growth in the Windows business. It highlights some interesting innovation that can happen...demonstrates the power of Windows 8 when tightly integrated with hardware and software," said the CFO.
Microsoft released the Surface series of tablets on October 26, 2012 along with its latest operating system, Windows 8. The Surface Pro tablet is slated for a February 9 release.
