According to the latest study initiated by the researchers state that sea grass plays a vital role in controlling heat as it absorbs more heat compared to forests.
The study is an extension of the theory according to which major portion of the carbon emitted is absorbed by sea. However, the study reveals the affect of the sea grass in changing the temperature of the Earth by absorbing carbon.
The research states that the carbon absorbed by the sea grass is twice in comparison to the temperate and tropical rain forests. The team of the researchers reported that sea grass can holds upto 83,000 metric tons of carbon per square kilometer which constitutes only 0.2 per cent of the world’s ocean.
Dynamic ecosystem for carbon transformation
In the statement, researcher James Fourqurean said that sea grass comprises of very small portion of seabed but they are dynamic ecosystem for carbon transformation. He added that the team found sea grass beds were storing carbons from thousands of years.
James Fourqurean said, “Sea grasses only take up a small percentage of global coastal area, but this assessment shows that they are a dynamic ecosystem for carbon transformation.”
He added, “Sea grasses have the unique ability to continue to store carbon in their roots and soil in coastal seas. We found instances where particular sea grass beds have been storing carbon for thousands of years.”
Reduce greenhouse gases
Sea grass is very helpful in reducing greenhouse gases as they burry most of the carbon in the seabed. According to an estimate they burry 10 per cent of the carbon annually in the seabed, however the sea grass is in danger and it is reducing at a fast pace due to global warming.
In the study largest concentration of carbon was registered in the Mediterranean region and its deposits were seen many meters deep.
The research was done in the collaboration between UNESCO, the international union for conservation of natural and conservation international.
