North Korea has warned that any attempt to criticize its nuclear programme will halt denuclearization talks in the Korean peninsula and they will treat it as a declaration of war.
Global leaders are accumulating in Seoul, South Korea for nuclear security summit meeting. US president Barak Obama is looking to use the summit for discouraging North Korea’s nuclear plans and satellite launch.
North Korea is expecting to launch its satellite next month and has made it clear that satellite launch is meant for peaceful purposes and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons. However, US is of belief that through satellite launch North Korea would build intercontinental ballistic missiles and mount them with nuclear warheads.
Declaration of war
North Korea has said any statement concerning its nuclear issue will be treated as an extreme insult and any criticism of its nuclear programme would be considered as a declaration of war and their consequences would act as an obstacle in denuclearization talks.
“If there is any provocative act such as the issuance of a so-called statement concerning ‘the North’s nuclear issue’ at the Seoul conference, it would constitute an extreme insult.”said the North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency.
“Any provocative act would be considered as a declaration of war against us, and its consequences would serve as great obstacles to talks on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” It further added.
United States statement
Daniel Russel, senior director for Asia of White House’s National Security Council said its upto North Korea to be in the main stream or deepen their isolation which is blocking them off internationally.
The ball is now in North Korea's court as it will have to take the decision that whether it wants to strengthen the international sanctions that are constraining them or to become an economic powerhouse.
The five nation talk in South Korea would be focusing mainly on the nuclear disarmament and tackling nuclear terrorism. Apart from that Russel has also urged China to influence the decision making of North Korea as it has been North Korea's close ally since a very long time.
