Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service where users post contents through instant messaging, SMS, or a web interface.
Number of tweets sent by Twitter users per day has increased from 65 million in 2010 to 200 million in 2011, claims Twitter in its official blog post.
In the official blog, Twitter posted, “Halfway through 2011, users on Twitter are now sending 200 million Tweets per day. For context on the speed of Twitter’s growth, in January of 2009, users sent two million Tweets a day, and one year ago they posted 65 million a day.”
According to the blog post, total number of massages sent in 2011 would equal 8,163 copies of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace, and if these copies are stacked on top of each other, it would equal the height of Taiwan's Taipei 101, the second tallest building in the world.
“A billion Tweets are sent every five days. What’s in them? Everything about every topic imaginable – whether it’s a unique bird’s-eye view of the Shuttle launch as seen from an airplane window or cheers of support for soccer teams in this year’s Champions League tournament.” – blog post by Twitter.
The post further stated that it would take 31 years to read all the texts.

Twitter still far behind: report
Earlier, Twitter had stated that about 500,000 new accounts are created every day. However, Twitter did not mention whether the users are posting contents on a regular basis.
According to CNET's Don Reisinger, despite the huge growth in posts, Twitter has yet to catch up with the number of content shared by Facebook per month.
Reisinger said, "Even with its growth, Twitter is still far behind Facebook. According to Facebook's official figures, the site has more than 500 million active users who each month share over 30 billion pieces of content, including links, blog posts, and photo albums.”
