Microsoft giving students free Xbox with PC purchase

Are you a student and planning to buy a computer? How about a free Xbox 360 when you buy a Windows PC? Well, here’s an offer for you from Microsoft- purchase a new Windows 7-based PC and get a free Xbox 360 4GB console.

Starting May 22 for a limited time, students buying a new Windows 7-based PC priced at $699 (U.S.) or more will also get a free Xbox 360 4GB console, the Redmond giant announced Friday.

Posting on the Windows Team Blog, Kristina Libby announced Microsoft’s new back-to-school deal for students that will offer Xbox 360 game consoles to students planning to purchase computer before heading off to college this fall.

Software mammoth Microsoft has “come up with a way to help you succeed in the coming year, while building on the fun and friendships that are key to your life. And starting May 22nd for a limited time, we are bringing students a very special offer,” she notes in the blog post.

Microsoft’s recommendations
Students can buy "any kind of PC," however, Microsoft specifically recommends the HP Pavilion DM4, the Dell Inspiron 14r, and the Samsung Series 9. Of the three, the Series 9 is by far the most expensive, with a price tag of $1649; the Dell and HP systems start around $599-$650.

The offer is available at participating retailers, including Dell.com, HP.com or Microsoft Store, for current students in the United States. The deal will run until Sept 3 or until supplies last, according to Microsoft.

Student can buy machine both online and in person
To take advantage of this offer, a student will need an .edu email address for purchasing computer online, or a student identification card if planning to purchase in person, according to the blog posting.

"While a Windows 7 PC is perfect for staying connected to your social networks, surfing the web, gaming and streaming videos, music and more, when you add the power of Xbox 360, you've got a world of entertainment at your fingertips," Libby said in the blog post.

Free 4GB Xbox 360

The console includes 4GB of onboard flash storage as well as updates to the XBox 360 S, including five USB 2.0 ports instead of three and a customized USB port for Kinect.

In the 4GB model, 802.11n wireless and S/PDIF are both supported internally with no need for an external adapter, and the device also supports Microsoft's custom hard drive interface; the drive itself costs $129.

“A hot new Windows 7-based PC with a free Xbox 360 is the ultimate productivity, social and entertainment package for students,” DailyTech quoted Kathleen Hall, general manager of Windows Marketing at Microsoft, as saying.

“In one shot, with this great offer, Microsoft is giving students everything they need for a successful new school year.”
