Porn webistes to get .xxx domain

However, the adult entertainment industry is not really too happy with the development. The leaders in the pornographic industry say that the new top-level domain would lead to financial discrimination.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has given its nod for the creation of the .xxx domain for pornographic websites.

It means that now you are soon going to see pornographic websites sporting .xxx in their web addresses instead of .com.

You got it right. You are going to see an entirely new kind of web addresses for pornographic websites. These websites can now choose the .xxx domain if they want.

Domain idea was once rejected
The creation of the .xxx domain had seen many obstacles earlier, and the idea had actually been even abandoned once.

Even now, three members of ICANN voted against the creation of the .xxx top-level domain, but nine members gave their approval. It has always been mired in controversy ever since the idea was floated.

The leaders in the pornographic industry say that the new top-level domain would cause financial discrimination.

This innovation is sure to carve out a portion of the internet for pornographic content, and is likely to make it easier for parents and administrators to filter sleazy content.

Registration of new domains will be problematic according to them. Needless to say, the proposal was met with strong protests from experts in the adult entertainment industry.

Creation of the domain still mired in controversy
Rita Rodin Johnston, a partner in Skadden Arps' Intellectual Property and Technology group, and an ICANN board member highlighted the controversial nature of the decision by citing that the ICANN board had once voted against the .xxx domain which was then reversed by an independent review panel.

"The reason I think the situation is between a rock and hard place is because this is the clear lose-lose for our board. If we vote in favor, we are seen to ignore comments of community participants including the GAC. If we vote against, we do not honor the findings of an independent process that we have set up to review our decisions," Johnston said.

George Sadowsky, an American computer scientist and a board member of the ICANN commented that the creation of the .xxx domain is a bad decision because it would allow for easy filtering of a domain at the top-level.

He believes that such a filtering would make it easy for certain political regimes to deny civil rights and freedom of speech to its people.
