Friday attacks
The killing spree started at 5 a.m. Friday, when Gelman stabbed his stepfather, Aleksandr Kuznetsov, at their apartment in Brooklyn.
The accused had had a argument with his mother, who had refused to let him take her car, a Lexus. That time his father intervened, and he was stabbed several times.
Later at around 10:30 am, the knife-wielding madman went to his ex-girlfriend's home, where he killed her 56-year-old mother, Anna Bulchenko, the officials stated.
At around 4:15 p.m. Gelman's ex-girlfriend Yelena Bulchenko, 20, returned home. On finding her mother dead, she called 911.
Gelman was still lurking in the home, and before the police arrived at 4:20 pm, he chased her into the streets and stabbed her 11 times.
He then took off the Lexus and bumped into another car in Brooklyn's Midwood neighborhood. When the driver confronted him, Gelman stabbed the 60-year-old driver in the shoulder and neck three times, but he survived the attack.
He left his Lexus and fled the scene in the driver's 1995 Pontiac Bonneville.
Later, graffiti artist ran down a 62-year-old pedestrian, Stephen Tanenbaum, who succumbed to the injuries.
Stabbing spree continues
Shortly before 1:00 a.m. Saturday, Gelman confronted a cab driver in Brooklyn and knifed him. The man survived the attack as is recovering in the local hospital.
Soon, he approached a couple in a Nissan, and stabbed the man several times in the hand, before hijacking their car, and fleeing away.
At 8:00 a.m. a passenger on an upper Manhattan train realized that a man on the train matched the photos of Gelman printed in the newspapers.
The passenger got off the train and approached the police at the subway stop and informed that a man resembling Gelman had knocked a newspaper out of her hand and said, “Do you believe what they're writing about me?"
Gelman then got off the train, and boarded another train where he stabbed a passenger.
Later, he went to the driver's compartment and knocked at the door, claiming that he was the police.
A police officer inside the driver's compartment, who was aware that the accused could have boarded the train, opened the door, and knocked Gelman down and took him into custody.
The police described him as a unemployed drug user who has been arrested 10 times in the past on charges related to drugs and graffiti.
